Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?

That’s the question that many people ask. I hear all the time “I don’t like breakfast food” or “I don’t have time for breakfast.” Skipping breakfast can result in low blood sugars, low energy levels, and overeating at subsequent meals. That does not mean that it has to be your largest meal of the day, but it is best to eat (or drink) a little something to start your day.

The ideal morning meal should consist of some protein, whole grains, and fruit/veggies. Here are some simple ideas:

  • Whole Grain Toast: topped with an egg, nut butter/banana, or avocado

  • Green Smoothie: Pineapple, mango, banana, a heaping handful of greens (kale/spinach) and coconut water, add some chia or flax seeds for added protein/fiber, or some protein powder

  • Yogurt Parfait: Low fat yogurt layered with fruit, nuts/seeds, and/or granola

  • Overnight Oatmeal: 1 to 1 ratio of oats to milk (add more milk depending on the consistency you prefer). Can prepare a few in advance in mason jars for a grab and go breakfast. Top with fruit, nuts, cinnamon, honey, whatever your heart desires!

  • Don’t like breakfast food? Have some leftovers, a granola bar, or a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread
