Fitness Friday | Pure PHIT Owner John Fleming

Fitness Fridays are back! This week we're shining the spotlight on long-time trainer John Fleming, owner of Pure PHIT gym, located in Scott's Addition and Manakin Sabot. Pure PHIT is a small group gym that focuses on high-intensity interval training and teaches its members to "learn as they burn!" To learn more about Pure PHIT and to workout with John, visit www.purephit.com.

1. What brought you to Richmond?

I've had the pleasure of working in both New Mexico and Colorado in my career, but at the end of the day Richmond is home. Parents, brother, aunts, uncles and cousins all were a big draw to move back.

2: When did you start your gym and why?

I opened up the first Pure PHIT in 2009. Part of it was just wanting to try something on my own and challenge myself. The larger part was seeing folks like my parents that were turned off by the "typical gym" and wanting to provide them with that.

3: Why do you exercise?

I feel like the reason why I exercise is constantly changing. But the older I get, the more I care about being able to do the active things I love. It's a bit more about function than physique for me these day. But who knows, if I have a mid-life crisis that may change. ;)

4: What type of music you like most?

Again, ever changing. I love reggae, 70's and 80's rock, and quite a bit of electronic. It's hard to pin it down.

5: What’s your favorite “healthy” food, store or restaurant to go to in RVA?

Is there one of those??? I tend to do the healthy eating at home and enjoy myself when I'm out and about. Big shout out to Fat Dragon, Stella's and East Coast Provisions though. :)

6: It's the weekend in RVA; where can we find you?

Most likely the volleyball court, the pool, or a restaurant with outdoor seating.

7: What inspired you to become an instructor?

When in college I met the Strength and Conditioning coach at JMU and the idea of being able to make a living helping athletes improve their skills was extremely appealing to me. Now a-days I get to do the same thing with everyday individuals. Everyday, new clients present new challenges. It's hard to beat seeing your instruction help to make an impactful difference in someone's quality of life.

8: In the morning you can’t live without…

Telling my Amazon Echo to shut up at least 3 times before she actually turns off the alarm. Alexa and I have a love-hate relationship.

9: If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?

At least a year's worth of international vacationing. Time to party the globe!

10: What is your favorite go-to exercise and favorite brand of workout gear?

Kettlebell swings. Sure-fire way to get a lot done in a short period of time. And my brand loyalty with workout gear is just about non-existent, haha. I do love our Pure PHIT t-shirts though. ;)
